Service to Federal Agencies:

Recycling Values Logo

GSA-NCR procures recycling contracts that are used by over 100 federal agencies from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. GSA recycling contractors pick up paper, cardboard, cans, glass/plastic bottles and printer cartridges from 120 federally-owned buildings housing over 110,000 employees in the Washington, DC area.

Economic and Environmental Benefits:

On average GSA-NCR collects over $300,000 for the federal government by selling over 8000 tons of recyclables per year. GSA returns this revenue to the agencies that generated the recyclables, minus a 3.6% administrative fee. This 8000 tons recycled represents a savings of $640,000 in landfill disposal fees. By recycling 7900 tons of paper products (100 tons were cans/glass/plastic bottles and printer cartridges), we saved the equivalent of 25,600 cubic yards of landfill space; 105,000 trees; 1.5 million gallons of oil; 22 million kilowatts of energy; and 15 million gallons of water.

Complying with Executive Orders:

Each agency shall minimize waste, including the generation of wastes requiring treatment and disposal; advance pollution prevention; support markets for recycled products; and promote a transition to a circular economy, as defined in section 2 of the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act (Public Law 116-224), by annually diverting from landfills at least 50 percent of non-hazardous solid waste, including food and compostable material, and construction and demolition waste and debris by fiscal year 2025.
